Disclaimer. Ignis-Guard 40MM is a product in development. This experimental map is situational awareness only — not dispatch and not 100% authoritative.

Map logic. USA points and orange perimeters are current NIFC WFIGS wildfires. Canada points are NRCan CWFIF active fires (2026, not extinguished, ≥ 10 ha). Optional yellow dots are CWFIS 24-hour satellite hotspots (heat, not always a named incident). Containment filter uses agency-reported percent contained; records with no containment stay visible only when the range is 0–100%.

For official accuracy use NIFC Open Data / WFIGS, NIFC, CWFIS, and local agency channels.

How this map is built

v1 reads official public endpoints in the browser. No private API keys. Points and polygons are requested as GeoJSON / JSON, then drawn on Leaflet.

United States — incidents

NIFC WFIGS current incident locations. Filter IncidentTypeCategory = WF (wildfire only). Fields used: name, size (acres), percent contained, state, county, discovery time, cause, unique ID.

United States — perimeters

NIFC WFIGS current interagency fire perimeters. Orange polygons are agency-mapped burn footprints, not satellite guesses.

Canada — active fires

NRCan CWFIF national active fires. Filter: fire year 2026, stage of control not extinguished (not EX), size ≥ 10 hectares. Coordinates come from the feed’s latitude / longitude fields. Stage codes: OC out of control, BH being held, UC under control.

Hotspots 24h

CWFIS hotspots_24h layer. Thermal detections from VIIRS / MODIS assembled by Natural Resources Canada. Optional overlay — a hotspot is heat, not always a named incident.

Basemaps

Default: Esri World Dark Gray Canvas (public tiles). Optional satellite: Esri World Imagery. Both use Esri attribution. No Carto key, no FIRMS MAP_KEY.

Limits

USA request cap 2,000 current WF records. Canada request cap 2,000 filtered records. Sizes are agency-reported and can lag. This board is situational awareness, not dispatch.

Tactics at the WUI

Structure defense first. Clear 0–5 ft of combustibles, then 5–30 ft, then 30–100 ft. Ember attack is the usual ignition path.
Anchor, flank, pinch. Hold an anchor point, work flanks, do not make a frontal stand on a running head fire.
Standoff tools. Aviation, engines, and precision ground tools buy time where crews cannot stand in the black.
Night and weather windows. Humidity recovery and wind drops are when line can be held.

Strategies

Full suppression when values at risk are immediate — homes, infrastructure, life safety.
Point protection when the fire is too large to surround: hold towns, ranches, utilities.
Confine / contain using ridges, roads, burns, and natural barriers.
Monitor remote fires that do not threaten values and that fire managers have accepted.
ICS unity of command. One incident commander, clear divisions, air-ground coordination.

Community actions

Follow local evacuation orders. Go early. Do not wait for flame front.
Hardened homes: Class A roof, screened vents, clean gutters, no juniper against siding.
Know two ways out. Share plans with neighbors who need help.
Report new starts to 911 / local dispatch — not this dashboard.
